Nestled within the stunning grounds of historic Cholmondeley Castle, our exclusive cricket ground provides an unforgettable setting for matches, events, and private tournaments. The backdrop of the Castle peering down is unrivalled and surrounded by picturesque parkland with centuries of heritage. We are the perfect place to enjoy the game in a truly remarkable location.

Cholmondeley plays host to a range of cricket from private, charity, and corporate days to Cheshire league fixtures for our home teams.

Host a Private Game

Cricket is the perfect game to entertain your guests. Our cricket calendar allows for a number of dates throughout the season for corporate and privately run games each year.

Let our in house team organise everything for your day including exclusive dining experiences inside the Castle, sipping champagne on the Terrace to enjoying canapés in the exquisite gardens.

One of the ‘loveliest cricket grounds’ in England, and a perfect venue for hosting, playing, and entertaining.

History

The Club was founded in 1886 after a meeting at the then Cholmondeley School (now the Cholmondeley Arms Pub). The founding fathers were local men, farmers, and Estate workers and during the early years Merrill, the butler, and Hughes, the local blacksmith, were in the team. The square such as it was had iron hurdles placed around it to keep off the sheep. Nowadays, our head groundsman and his team have the Canadian Geese to contend with!

In 1924 Lady Cholmondeley gifted a tent, this was the changing facility until 1928 when the then Marquis of Cholmondeley provided funds for the erection of a pavilion built on stilts at the waters edge with a thatched roof. In 1975 the Club erected the present pavilion.

During WW2 it is thought some Polish refugees billeted at the Castle played some casual matches. After the war some improvements were made including a permanent fence in 1948 and the first sight screens appeared in 1949.

The Club’s most famous ‘old boy’ is the celebrated best-selling author Dick Francis, who was a playing member in the 1940s and 50s.
